Being that it’s National Veggie Burger Day (June 5) and it was National Hamburger Day (May 28) last week, I just have to take a few moments and explain why you NEED to try a plant-based burger … note, I’m not talking about the days-of-old “veggie” burgers that resembled more of a hockey puck than food. I’m talking about “burgers’ made from plant-sourced ingredients. And before you ask, do I have a favorite … eh, yes and no, but since this isn’t a sponsored post I’m not going to tell you that one is better than the other—because quite frankly, I don’t think there’ son clear winner on the market just like I don’t think there isn’t room on your plate for both plant-based “burgers” and ones made with beef.
Are plant-based burgers healthier
Eh. It’s debatable. I mean yes, there are some aspects that on the surface seem “healthier” but when it comes right down to it, some are LOADED with sodium and what I like to call make-believe ingredients. With that being said, it’s no surprise that most Americans eat way too much meat. So, balancing your diet with a combination of plant-based foods with products sourced form animals isn’t a bad thing—regardless of what the diehard vegans say … and yes, I’ve gotten my fair share of hate mail. One person even went so far as to accuse me of suggesting that I think it’s OK to eat dumb animals, but not smart ones. I know. I know. (What a dumbass.)
Are plant-based burgers better for the planet
Again, eh. It’s debatable. Listen, ag runoff and improper—dare say HORRIBLE—farming practices (think CAFOs) are, well, horrible. But. Properly raised, humanely cared for (I can already hear the haters sending me emails about how raising an animal for slaughter isn’t humane) husbandry is A OK.
My one ask, is that if you are going to eat meat, make it locally sourced and KNOW YOUR FARMER!!
Bottom line—if there can be a bottom line in a less than five-minute read—there is room on your plate, and mine, for both beef burgers and plant-based. I mean just look at the photos … even my husband’s friends liked them!! So, why not give plant-based “burgers” a whirl?? And if you do, drop me a note and let me know what you think : ) That is unless you’re one of the haters … in that case, F off : )
